My first encounter with these Italian retro-beatsters was their last year’s split single with fellow native soulmates, Viv Prince Experience (reviewed elsewhere on these pages) to which they contribute a smashing mid’60s garage punker called Fire.
Turning into a kind of a Gouldman-through-Yardbirds piece of a freakbeat, after a punk-ish surf intro, and an occasional nod towards The Beatles as well, setting my expectations “pretty” high, and here they are finally fulfilling all of them with no less than eleven more (children of) nuggets.
Besides the usual “spot the reference” game they seem to be playing throughout the album, recycling classic garage-punk guitar riffs, the ones that got me instantly hooked on, are the Kinky How Do You Feel, finding the Davies bros halfway between their initial r’n’b daze and their social-observer role that followed.
The Seedy folk rocking jangle of Billy Is Over, and Brother Ringo with it’s infectious fuzzed-out guitar line, being much more of an Americanized take on what Brother Ringo and the lads had been doing around the middle of decade.
Somehow, I always find it much easier to get something that fits in a “second hand” rather than a usual shop.
