Various Artists – Setting The Trends Vol. 3

Volume 3: Groovy British Blue-Eyed Soul, Beat, R & B, Hammond Movers PART 2

After the first two volumes, Nutshell continues to “set the trends”, picking up right where the first, British based volume had left off, delivering another set of mostly horn-driven, blue-eyed soul stomp and r’n’beat, spiced with some slightlydelic flavours too, just for the good measure of it.

Besides the usual dose of some pretty rare stuff, there’s quite a few well-known names too, such as PAUL & BARRY RYAN with the Spectorized popsike of Keep It Out Of Sight, the unusually hard rocking HONEYBUS with Tender Are The Ashes, CHRIS ANDREWS with the expectedly chart-friendly sound of Hold On, another SHADOWS’ instrumental from later in the decade, Mike D’Abo’s BAND OF ANGELS with a genre defining piece of blue-eyed soul, or JACKIE EDWARDS with the quite recognizably crafted Oh Mary.

Some of the other “grooviest movers” of the bunch are LYONS & MALONE’s only 1969 single sides, both being more appropriate for a Britsike volume, MIKE RAYNOR & CONDORS’ slightly Eastern influenced novelty arrangement of The Hollies-like Is She A Woman Now, the jazzy, Georgie Fame-ish Tell Me What You’re Gonna Do by MANCHESTER’S PLAYBOYS, the Stax-like Merseybeat of FORCE FIVE, as well as the classic Mersey-flavoured r’n’b of the SECRETS and CHEROKEES.

In search of the more “soulful” ones, check out the entries by HARLEM JONNS RESHUFFLE, NEIL CHRISTIAN, GUY DARRELL or THE NIGHT-TIMERS feat. HERBIE GOINS.

Now everyone off to the dancefloor until the next “set of trends” comes along!
