The Great Northwestern Hoboes – Between Catherine And Hope

Though I can’t agree with the press release saying that they sound unlike anything else coming out of Liverpool at the moment, an emotion that I do second, is that they really might be the “next big thing”.

As for the sound, well it’ seems hard for a Scouse kid to pick up a guitar these days, without reminding at least a bit of “the moderndaze Barrett”, Lee Mavers … which is a good thing of course!

In the case of the ‘Hoboes, with their unpretentious production ways, they seem to catch that groove Mavers was after all those years ago. Thanks to its loose vibe, insanely catchy guitar line and perfect melody, the title tune might be just the perfect summer single and it really does recall Brown Eyed Girl, as also pointed out in the press release.

The first of the two “b-sides”, World Still Spins Around, will make you remember The La’s’ most eclectic folky moments, while the other one, the stripped-down acoustic Lost At The Sea, would fit Jimmy’s mood in the closing scenes of Quadrophenia.

These should make enough a reason to make the wait for their full length release more than worthwhile, however long it takes.
