Here’s an album to be used nowadays as a companion to The Maharajas’ output, in continuing the Swedish mid’60s garage revival, started out more than two decades ago by such pioneers of the genre as The Stomachmouths and The Crimson Shadows.
Also, for anyone who has been missing The Strollers’ contribution to the cause, this is the perfect cure! The album opens with the freakbeat-ish frenzy of the “big boss sounding” title tune in the vein of the (Trevor French fronted) Clique, and they continue with the similar mod-ern stomper Down And Out, bringing the trademark Farfisa flourishing to the fore, where it stays throughout the album.
The one that keeps it where the opening pair left off is You’ll Miss Me, which is sure to make you “stroll” down the memory lane, and some of the album highlights, such as Thing’s Been Bad, Rain Keeps Falling, Goodbye or Purple Clouds also add some of that folky teen punk feel, which is also not too far from where the closer Point Of No Return fits, but with an extra eastern-tinged spookiness.
Of course, no decent garage-punk revival can be imagined without at least some Kinky riffage, which can be heard in its cruder Americanized form in When The Day Breaks, You Can’t Change Me or the horn-powered You’ll Miss Me.
The expectations set by a couple of single releases that preceded the long player, have been more that fulfilled, so don’t make it too long before you “get a head”!
