Though more than two thirds of The Rookies debut longplayer consists of covers, these Italian retro garage punkers make such a cool choice that you can’t help but forgive it all.
However, the four originals make up for it pretty well, with the three of them leaning heavily onto the ever-present Swedish-school-of-retro-cool, with it’s freakbeatin’ garage barrage of fuzz’n’buzz (title song, You Better Go Home, Astrid), while my favourite is I Walk Alone, which is kinda like an imaginary punked up Graham Gouldman tune …
And to name just a few of the cool covers, there’s The Attack’s post-mod heavy Britsike Freedom For You, The Mascots’ freaky folk-rock I Want To Live, the equally freaky piece of Dutchbeat of The Motions’ I’ve Waited So Long, more Nederbiet by one of the genre originators, The Outsiders’ What’s Wrong With You, The Lost’s Them-like r’n’b Backdoor Blues, the Gene Clark-ish folk rock of One Time Around, originally by the Dalton, James & Sutton Trio etc.
Thank God they’re so “out of fashion” !!!
