Liverpool Express – Once Upon A Time

Liverpool Express offers a ride back to “once upon a time” and even though you might be a bit confused if it’s the ‘60s, ‘70s or ‘80s that they’re taking you to, being among the Beatlemaniacs looking for any reference you might find, should make this a pleasant trip, which you will keep taking, over and over.

Back in the second half of the seventies, this bunch of Scousers decided to bring their Beatle-fascination to the world (greeted the most in South America (!?)) , leaving behind a couple of fab attempts, including You Are My Love which was being cited by no other than McCartney, as being one of his all-time favourites (!).

Now, after almost thirty years, they realized that there’s still enough of the mentioned fascination in them to share it with us, resulting with an album chockfull of Fab Four-references by way of the likes of Badfinger, Klaatu, E.L.O. … with the only objection being the (sometimes too) hi-tech production.

Still, tunes like the opening Chinatown and Sailin’ Down To Rio are sure to make you fly with the “wings”, Best Years Of My Life and Tomorrow Is Another Day will remind you of Macca’s best ballads.

Similarly, the title tune points its Badfinger right at you, the closing track is a tale about The Worst Band In The World as if told by “the best band in the world”, conducted by Sgt. Pepper, while the most obvious tribute is, of course, John George Ringo and Paul, made out of Beatle-song-sketches.

Billy Kinsley’s early-sixties involvement with The Merseybeats, might be another detail worth of mention for Mersey-freaks, but it’s really their own music that should make you want to get your ticket for the ‘Express.

Also out on their own label is the first ever CD-release of the band’s ‘70s material.
