SinglesGoingSteady #01: Randells – Seven Inch [Jarama 45RPM Recs.,2022]

Randells – Seven InchWhat could be better than starting this series of highly recommended – but perhaps not so well-known – songs with one that celebrates the 7″ format itself. Randells’ Seven Inch is a two-and-a-half-minute tribute to the small plastic discs we love to love.

The song itself can best be described as exuberant bubblegum punk that draws on the style The
Ramones’ had during the first half of their career, combined with the sound of the 90’s punk rock
scene (Green Day and their ilk). That’s why it’s no mystery that the title of the B-side is Ramona. And what better label to release this delightful little treat than Spain’s own Jarama 45RPM Recs? This strictly 45rpm label based in Madrid has released around 20 singles since 2016. All of them have that instantly accessible, no-frills power pop concept that makes the label’s entire output well worth exploring.

Robert “Obba” Blomgren – one of the writers of Seven Inch – cooperated with Jonte “Beef Bonanza” Andersen (The Bones). He told me that it was initially intended to be a “regular” love song, but ended up as a tribute to proper music in the proper format when one morning he received some lyrics from “Beef Bonanza” that “Beef” had made up during a nighttime leak with flowing inspiration. So it goes. Lyrically, Seven Inch describes the rush that punk junkies addicted to the crackling sound of the needle feel when it lands on the vinyl. Of course, given the size mentioned in the title, they couldn’t stop themselves to make sexual insinuations. Don’t forget to check out the other releases of these South Swedes. (I was also told that their third album will be released soon.)

Seven Inch is along with The Barracudas’ God Bless The 45 (penned by Robin Wills) most recent plastic commemorations that deserves frequent spins. Remember: seven inch is just enough. Less is more. Class.
