When it comes to the contemporary beat scene, being lead by a pair of Indikation-related members (one ex and one still with them) might be as good a reference for a band as any, if you are among those in the know.
Though The Indikation leans towards a tad grittier ‘65/’66 sound, there’s a Mersey vibe or two in there too, so it doesn’t really come as much of a surprise that Peter Berry & The Shake Set opt for the genuine ‘63/’64 sound of “some other guys” soaking in the sweat of Cavern or Star Club.
Verging between the still-more-r’n’b-but-almost-pop (Someone Like You, Please Step Aside, Shake It Out With Me), and vice versa (I’ll Set You Free, Sorrow Counts For Love, It’s Gonna Work Out), and occasionally stepping aside into “shadows” for a coupla instros.
The list of the band members’ favourite artists describes it all really, with the three of them naming the usual suspects such as The Roulettes, Ian & The Zodiacs, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Cliff & The Shadows, Swinging Blue Jeans, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates …, while the drummer’s choices of The Pretties or The Byrds, seem more appropriate for the sound of The Indikation (btw, he’s not one of the two ex-Indikation members).
Of course, just like in cases of soulmates such as The Kaisers, the best (only?) way/place to do it is in Toe Rag studios, with Liam Watson twiddling the knobs.
