—————————————————-
Vocoder have been together for three years, initially gaining notoriety in the Wellington, New Zealand scene for their energetic, scissor-kicking, instrument-trashing live style.
They have rapidly evolved into a tight three-piece with a sound that has been variously described as “surf-inspired alt rock with huge lashings of eighties new-wave pop”, “post-punk” and “wall-of-sound pop”.
Vocoder’s debut EP Sweethearts of the Radio came out in late-2002, featuring The Turnaround which was also released as a radio single from the Australian compilation Planet of the Popboomerang.
In November 2003, the limited edition single Collapsed Stars c/w Falko redux was released in New Zealand. Both sides of the single were playlisted at b-net stations with Falko reaching the 95BFM (Auckland) Top Ten.
Melbourne’s Popboomerang Records are releasing The Collapsed Stars EP a five-track CD featuring an edited version of the title track, Falko and three newly recorded songs including a cover of the Kinks’ obscurity This Is Where I Belong.
“Fizzing like the Buzzcocks on a caffeine high, Vocoder have energy and scissor-kicks to burn.” Real Groove Magazine, January/February 2003
“full of clever rhythms and undeniably catchy choruses . . . fierce pop salutes with a fuzzed-out ’76 punk core . . . the best bits will hit you like a train on subsequent listens” SplendidZine (US), April 2003
