The Ugly Beats – Take A Stand

Having been bringing THE mid’60s beat back, ever since their debut two years ago (Bring On The Beats!, reviewed elsewhere on these pages), these (not really) ugly Texans are back themselves, with another bunch of hip shakin’ “children of nuggets”.

Yet another thing brought back from the hazy daze of the sixties day-glo, is the cover art borrowed from The Byrds’ Mr.Tambourine Man, which, along with it’s non-originality, actually makes the whole thing irresistible enough, even before the first listen.

Opening with the garage punk teen rebellion of the title tune, it isn’t really the album’s prevailing attitude, poping up just occasionally, as in the Raiders/Remains-like dancefloor filler Lights Come On, and with a bit lighter approach in Your Turn To Cry.

Of the janglier ones, (I Don’t Wanna Be The One To) Bring Her Down provides a Mersey-through-Groovies kind of a groove, Million Dollar Man and I’m Gonna Break Her Heart are a pair of folk-rockers of the ‘Brummels-kind, with the latter being not too far from an imaginary mid’60s cover of Hüsker Dü’s Never Talking To You Again, while both the moody Last Stop and Ain’t That Old share the familiar-riffsploitation, with the former being recognizable as soon as “you walk in the room”, and the latter being that “little black” jangly one.

Of the covers included, besides The Ventures’ Action Plus and Nikki Corvette’s You’re The One, the one that’s worth a special mention is The Remains’ Let Me Through, which, as far as I know, isn’t available in its original version, except for the video of the band’s Ed Sullivan Show appearance.
