Mark DeCerbo & The Four Eyes – Sweet On The Wine

Nowadays considered for San Diego scene veterans, Mark DeCerbo & The Four Eyes deliver their looooong awaited sophomore album, following the 1991 (!?) debut Baby’s Not In The Mood, still finding them amidst the same old search for the perfect pop tune … not that they haven’t already found it a couple of times.

Much in the vein of another contemporary soulmate, David Grahame, the best that they get is while clearly showing off their McCartney fascination through several kinds of ways, such as in a couple of Macca-through-Costello examples like the opening pair of Neophyte In Flight/Artless, Heartless, and Little Cloud, or Macca-through-Crowded-House in Breathe, or also throwing in just a bit more vintage influences of Emitt Rhodes in Green Grass Girls or Badfinger in Omission.

Above All and Love Unclassified both recall Sir Paul himself at his happy-go-lucky jangliest, the first of the two bonus tracks, Emily, takes it way back to the Merseybeat daze, while Add Water and Goin’ Places “squeeze” in some mainstream-ish “couldabeenhit” flavour too.

Hoping that it won’t take another 14 years, I’ll keep my “four eyes” opened until the next one comes along.
